Back in the days of the yore, ships from afar carrying goods often ran aground on Sand Key Reef, nine miles off of the southern coast of Key West. When all the pirates in Key West heard there was booty to be had, they'd jump in their boats and have a good ol’ pirate ship race out to the reef. The first one there could claim the ship's cargo! Arrggh!

Today, we playfully remember this history with a sailing race out to the Sand Key Lighthouse. It all starts with a cannon firing, and then all of the schooners of Key West are on their way! The boat that gets there first "wins" the Schooner Wharf Bar Wrecker’s Cup at an evening awards ceremony. Enjoy the excitement on this Key West sailing adventure aboard Schooner America 2.0 as we race for victory! This is a fun Key West schooner race and family-friendly activity aboard Schooner America 2.0!

Reviews

  • What a GREAT experience !!!

Not a cloud in the sky… The trip was fantastic. I learned a bit about sailing – it takes a lot of knowledge of how to tack and lots of strength to hoist those huge sails. The captain and crew were very friendly, helpful and just all around fantastic. The lunch and liquid refreshments were also excellent. We, aboard the America 2.0, of course, toasted our wide victory with champagne.

  • Wonderful afternoon

This is our 3rd year participating in the Wreckers Race, it’s a fabulous opportunity to sail on one of the fastest schooners. Highly recommend an afternoon on the water on this vessel or a sunset cruise.

We enjoyed the Wrecker’s Race. It’s nice to be on the water and have fun. Lunch was good and the crew was great!

  • A Real Race

I didn’t really expect a race, more of a glorified, tourist day sail. I was surprised to find it was pretty much a real race. In between jibes, the crew served beer, wine and champagne, but was never too far away from tending sails. The big boat sailed well and was fast! The crew were well experienced and fun. Personally, I was prepared to be disappointed but instead got to sail in a race in Key West, on a fast boat, and win! Only wish there had been an awards ceremony afterwards. It was a highlight of our Key West trip.
